The calendar you've been waiting for

The wait is over. For nearly eight years, friends, family, and foes have asked when I’ll release a Year of the Sunrise wall calendar. Lets do it the most Bugsy way possible.

From the beginning, a project rule has been to never give one photo more prominence more than another. So how do I do do a 12-month calendar to represent 3,000 mornings? I have never wanted to do a best-of calendar, but what if I do a worst-of calendar?

This “Ugly” sunrise calendar gets to the heart of the project. It has always been about challenging the notion of what we see as sunrise, to rethink what makes a beautiful photograph, to embrace the harshest of weather conditions.

I have never adopted the idea that “every sunrise is unique and beautiful,” some sunrises are ugly, and that’s OK.

The message, through the darkest of mornings, is to still find hope and possibility in life.

The Ugly Sunrise Calendar offers a simple reminder, that even on the grayest of days, the sun still rises.

Overheard Testimonials

Inspired by the Sunrise Gallery

Over many years I have written down many dozen of what I call “overheard testimonials.” As I sit in my office next to the Sunrise Gallery I enjoy listening to people as they make unfiltered remarks about what’s become my life’s work. This is a sample of word-for-word comments, many which mention how ugly a particular sunrise was.

  • β˜…β˜†β˜†β˜†β˜†

“It doesn’t even have the sun, it’s depressing! Mine was depressing! There was no sun in that picture, it was nothing but fog!”

  • β˜…β˜†β˜†β˜†β˜†

“Mine is a dead bird, are you serious?”

  • β˜…β˜†β˜†β˜†β˜†

“Some of these are sad.” - 10 year old boy

  • β˜…β˜…β˜†β˜†β˜†

“Nope, the sun didn’t rise on my birthday.”

  • β˜…β˜†β˜†β˜†β˜†

    “Mine is horrible.”

“That one is ugly, I don’t like it.”

“Ewwwww. Are you kidding me? Mine is the worst one up here!”

  • β˜…β˜…β˜†β˜†β˜†

    Person 1: “What’s this one?”

Friend of Person 1: “Oh it’s ugly.”

  • β˜…β˜†β˜†β˜†β˜†

    “Kris, your birthday sucks!”

  • β˜…β˜†β˜†β˜†β˜†

“Are they the same [photos] as before?”

Her friend, “No, because mine was ugly before.”
