Nothing new here, just wondering what I’m going to do on January 1, and January 2, and January 3… More importantly, what am I going to feel?
I’d love to keep going. With each passing day, other than February 29, I’d be able to compare it to the previous year’s sunrise. I could tackle an entirely new approach to prints and products and web features.
Last January and February I was nervous to tell people about this sunrise project. Nervous for their reactions, anticipating an eyeroll, waiting to hear that it’s the most generic thing you can photograph. Most of that never came as for the most part people are really polite and Americans save face a lot more than they tell the blunt truth.
Now, everyone seems to know about this project. In fact I am surprised how many people, which warms my little heart big ego. Just yesterday two lovely older women came into the shop praising it, they even participate in Plaidurday. I was tickled.
Last year it was my nerves and self-doubt of sharing an idea. As I head to January that has been replaced with a recurring statement I’m told… “I hope you sleep in on January 1” or “I bet you can’t wait to sleep in” or any other iteration of the idea that this project is almost over and sleeping in is the only obvious thing to reward myself.
The thing is, I might keep going. If I sleep in on January 1, what will I have really gained?
Now, my struggle is, how do I make those decisions for myself without the weight of others expectations?
Yesterday I went to see The Rise of Skywalker, and afterward I read all the reviews and breakdowns, which are quite mixed. But can you imagine? When the origianl Star Wars triology was releaed there was no expectation, it had complete freedom. No different than January when this project started. But this coming January, there are expectations. There’s a storyline, people are asking me “What’s next? Are you going to photograph every sunset of 2020?” That thought isn’t beyond me, it sounds fun. But now, how do I know if its my idea an ambition or someone elses? How did George Lucas handle that? I don’t want 2020 to have a Jar Jar Binks.
P.S. I was literally just stopped in my tracks and asked, “Is everyone asking about your sunrises now?”
