Musings [415 words]

Stress is in the air. A dilemma. A conflict.

Every day now I’m wondering how to finish this project. Is it even as big of a deal as I make of it? What value does it have? Does it really even matter?

For months now I have had two visions of how this year ends, because who knows, maybe the proejct keeps going.

Option 1: A local sunrise party

This has been roughly 90% a Marquette project. How great would it be to finish this year with a sunrise party along the lake to get a bunch of people together to watch the sunrise. Also, it’ll be at a super reasonable time, 8:33AM, the latest sunrise of the year in Marquette. Also, it’s New Year’s Eve day, rather than a late night rager, have an early morning ease into the day with friends over the sun and coffee and donuts and mimosas? That’s the issue, mimosas (or maybe Irish coffee?), which I’m really drawn to right now. I haven’t had one in a couple years if not longer, and it just seems to fit the ocassion. They’re kind of the color of the sun. But where can I gather people outside on the lake to legally drink mimosas? Darn city parks and their rules.

Option 2: Whitefish Point to Cadillac Mountain

Again, with the sentimental crap, it would be cool to finish the project at the same place it started, Whitefish Point. As I thought of this I realized well, I’d already be a couple hours east, and I’ve always wanted to catch the first sunrise of the New Year in the United States, which is on top of Cadillac Mountain in Maine.

  • Leave Whitefish Point by 9AM
  • Drive 19 hours (including refueling) to Cadillac Mountain
  • Arrive at Cadillac Mountain by 4AM
  • Two hour hike to the top
  • Arrive at the top by 6AM
  • Sunrise at 7:08AM

Now that sounds fun! I just need a driving buddy, maybe two. I’d love to bring [REDACTED], but I just can’t forsee it happening.

On the way back we could take our time and see the sites in Montreal and elsewhere.

If Cadillac Mountain is the goal, certainly I could leave a few days earlier and make the solo trip without having to drive 19 hours through the night. However, this project has been such an Upper Peninsula and Lake Superior focus, it seems rude to ditch it for some random new places along the way.

Uff da.
