My first time visiting Belle Isle, it’s a Michigan destination I had been wanting to get to for years.
Driving into the city last night it was hard not to think about the traffic, the construction, the lights, the lack of nature, and how long it took to go just a few miles. With each passing mile my appreciation for life in Marquette grew. I love the life I’ve created for myself, or at least 80% of it. I walk a block to work. Everyone who walks by says hello. To get to the middle of nature in any direction is a matter of minutes.
In fact I timed it the other day, from my apartment’s parking spot to drive and then hike to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain takes 22 minutes. That is much shorter than I would have estimated.
There is no hustle to climb a corporate latter, people wear colors other than black, and nature. It all comes back to nature. Here, nature is a hunt, just to find a park is a hike, and certainly a horizon.
More and more of society is moving to urban areas and the number is predicted to keep growing. Could I do this project living in an urban area? A place of sprawl? I would just have to be in the hart of a city, the sprawl crushes the spirit.
It was a reminder of how spoiled I am. Other than a few trips out of the Upper Peninssula, I have seen Lake Superior every single day this year. Most days I have walked the shores and experienced her.
However, I love cities. I’m excited to go to TEDxDetroit, go to a Red Wings game, perhaps go to the Mariner’s Church to pay homoage to sailors who have parished on the Great Lakes.
2020 should be this project, but with people. Street photography style.
