Drops are now deprecated. After a good run, I've learned I can publish sunrises faster when I do just a few at a time, as a time allows, rather than committing to twelve at a time. This will allow me to catch up on publishing faster. See the most recent sunrises to be published.

This feels monumental, exciting, almost emotional. Today I am publishing photographs to this website for the first time since December 31, 2019. That day was monumental in its own right, as I completed my New Year’s resolution of photographing every sunrise of the year. I guess I forgot to stop.

This website required a massive overhaul of code to accommodate much more than was ever intended. For my fellow developer nerds, I’ll write about that in detail later on.

2020 was a year where so much changed, for me and for everyone. Early in the year I had lost my business partner who had moved out of town. Shortly after that, the COVID-19 pandemic hit the country and my shop was forced to close for three months. With short notice, I also had to find a new place to live. While navigating all this on my own, sunrise gave me something positive to focus on. It was my place of solitude and reflection through the murder of George Floyd and the political upheaval through the 2020 election cycle.

To look back on these photos now is an emotional journey back to 2020. By some measure, I took several steps backward, through a long and daunting process of languishing, which I am still fighting my way back from.

It’s good to be publishing again, and I’m reminded of the beauty I experienced through the struggle of it all.
