What a unique sunrise outing. It’s about 640 feet from doorstep to toes in water. In that stretch, there is a small trail, a parking lot, Lakeshore Boulevard, a small wooded area, and then the beach. All of this is surrounded by neighborhoods and roads.
A few miles north at Presque Isle deer are all of the place and very comfortable with the presence of humans. But here, at my home beach, it’s a very rare thing to see deer strolling about. In fact I can count about three other occurrences in six years.
One of those is June 13, 2020.
In those other instances, what I had never seen before, was a stag herd.
Earlier, I had stepped further out and was shocked to see 3 o 4 sizeable bucks. It looked like they were headed in my direction.
Being neither a hunter or wildlife photographer, I impressed myself with my next move. I knew I was in their path, as the only other direction was the road.
I backed out of the wooded trail and back to the bike path. I knew if I could nudge them in the right direction, they would walk directly into this gap in the trees creating a perfect silhouette.
As I got just a little behind them, I slowly walked behind them so they’d move in the right direction. And it worked perfectly.
Of course I had a single chance, and I wish I had crouched lower to the ground.
Alas, I’m not a wildlife photographer, but this was a memorable outing and it was a special moment to see this herd of bucks strutting near my home beach.
