Musings [306 words]

Sunrise is like a box of chocolates…

“My momma always said, ‘Sunrise is like a box of chocolates…’” (my mom really did say that to me)

Of the many iconic scenes from Forrest Grump…

“My Mama always said you’ve got to put the past behind you before you can move on. And I think that’s what my running was all about. I had run for 3 years, 2 months, 14 days, and 16 hours.”

After 30 seconds of silence, the camera zooms in on Forrest’s face.

“I’m pretty tired, I think I’ll go home now. And just like that, my runnin’ days was over.”

If Forrest started running on January 1, 2019, today would be the day Forrest stops running. I have now watched as many consecutive sunrises as days Forrest Gump ran. It’s strange, to identify with a fictional character. But in all our lives, there are stories and experiences so fanciful, it seems they could only be written into a movie, and there aren’t many places to turn for an empathy to relate to 1,172 sunrises. Whether it’s Forrest Gump, or Auggie and his photographs in the film “Smoke”, 1,172 consecutive sunrises is fanciful, it almost requires a fictional character to summarize the experience of it all.

According to this, Forrest began running July 5, 1976.

He stopped running on September 19, 1979. Forrest ran for 1,172 days.

We can induce that he begins running earlier in the day, because there is still another golden hour in the next shot after he starts running.Sunrise in central alabama on July 5 is 5:43AM.

But the shadows are shining almost straight down when he starts running, meaning he must have left closer to midafternoon.

He ended his run in Mexican Hat, Utah. Sure would love to sunrise there, perhaps on September 19 one of these years.
