This decision is difficult. I’m far more in love with the freighter photo, but this ice formation is unique and beautiful. While I’ve seen this ice formation before, It’s not common and I have no recollection of capturing it before, where I have plenty of freighter photos. Just not sure I have one as beautifully in the evaporation smoke as this one. This decision is the epitome of the project, choosing one photo to represent the morning. This was inspired by my photojournalism reading and lessons in college. You might have a dozen incredible photos from a the football game, but only one photo goes to print. Make your selection. I believe this practice is critical to photography, but seldom practiced in nature photography, where it’s common to pick all the best photos from all the best mornings, and leave out everything else, especially in the digital age where as many photos can go to print as your heart desires.
