Musings [309 words]

Yes, that is my 85mm lens submerged in the water.

Dropping a camera lens in the lake

This was one of the more memorable outings. I stepped through the thin ice, feet into knee-deep water, and plunged forward. I landed on the ice with the head of my tripod going straight into my gut and knocking the wind out of myself.

After collecting my breath, I continued on with my sunrising, and then noticed my jacket pocket felt awfully light. Sure enough, when I went through the ice the lens popped out of my pocket and went straight into freezing Superior water.

This was the first experience of the sort, and the first time fishing camera gear out of a body of water.

At first, the hole was covered with icy chunks and I couldn’t see anything. I used the feet of my tripod to clear the slush around the hole, all while hoping I didn’t fall through a second time.

Eventually I was able to make out the shape of my lens. I had no choice to get fully into the water and fish it out with my hand. So I did.

I was soaking wet, but thankfully it was a mild 28º.

It took a days (weeks?) for the lens to fully dry on the inside, but I continued to use this same lens for two more years, without problem.

In choosing the photo selection for the morning at hand, I had no choice but to choose a photo with water drops on the lens. It was not raining, it was not blowing snow, which is cause for most of the water drops that appear on my sunrise photos. Nope, this one was from breaking through the ice, falling forward, and knocking the wind out of myself. Sunrise is a contact sport.
