Today marks two yeras since the infamous donut sunrise.
For the fun of it, I set out to see if I could accurately recreate the beloved photo. Picking up a donut from Huron Mountain Bakery to bring to sunrise was the easy part. Cake donut with vanilla icing and sprinkles please!
However, you can really see the impact made from a clear versus hazy horizon at sunrise. Creating that same sunburst becomes a lot harder.
Maybe the donut sunrise will never be recreated, and that might be for the best.
It’s not that I never enjoyed the donut sunrise, but when the Sunrise Gallery came together, it seemed to be the one that caught everyone’s attention, when in reality, it was created out of boredom, trying to mix it up after being eight months into the project.
I joked with my friend Julie, “the donut sunrise, it’s always the damn donut sunrise.” People seemed to skip over the ones I was much more intentional about, the ones that presented more challenge, or that I simply found to be more stunning.
It’s a lesson in art that when you put your work into the world, you don’t get to decide which is most beloved, if any at all.
Thank you for loving the donut sunrise friends. And thank you, Tim.
Long live the donut!
