This morning I am stricken with great shame. My pal Edith joined me and we grabbed to go coffees for our walk at Wetmore Landing. After finishing my coffee I put the cup in my jacket pocket to properly dispose of it later. At some point the plastic lid popped off and fell out of my jacket, blending in with the snow and seemingly impossible to find. Why was I drinking coffee from a paper and plastic cup instead of my to-go mug? That alone is shameful.
This summer I will commit to filling two bags of trash along Lake Superior.
Each year, I kid you not, about 22 million pounds of plasticenters the Great lakes. Over 12,000 of these pounds are microplastics, many of which are hardly visible to the naked eye, and nearly impossible to clean up.
Accidentally littering happens, but I hope we all feel a tremendous amount of responsibility in doing our part.
