Musings [273 words]
A favorite book of mine is titled Walking by Henry David Thoreau. Originally it was delivered as a lecture on April 23, 1851. He gave ten readings of the piece, more than any of his other lectures, and it was first published by Atlantic Monthly after his death in 1862.
Since the beginning of the year the book has been on my mind. Somewhere, buried in my old possessions is a copy that has more lines highlighted in it than lines that are not. I’ve dug everywhere this last weekend to find it with no luck. So yesterday, after closing the shop, I headed to Snowbound Books to place an order for the same 1994 publication. I ordered two, just in case.
And this morning, I opened my phone briefly before heading out. The first article I saw was all I needed, “Why we owe it to ourselves to spend quiet time alone every day”.
The article asks, “What can we do? Somehow, we need to create a new habit of mind, as individuals and as a society." For me, it’s chasing the sunrise every day of 2019. Something I’m not even sure I can achieve and feels a little ridiculous.
There has been a convergence of thoughts, of old and new, through natue and solitude, that seem to prove I’m consciously working towards something. I’m not sure what that something or what that outcome will be.
“Take long walks in stormy weather or through deep snows in the fields and woods, if you would keep your spirits up. Deal with brute nature. Be cold and hungry and weary.” – Henry David Thoreau
Fuel more Sunrises
There is plenty more to come from Year of the Sunrise. You can always add a cup of coffee to keep me going strong in the mornings, or a tank of gas to get me to some new places, as the sun keeps rising.
