For six consecutive years I built a tradition of watching the first sunrise of the New Year, always including a small road trip to one of the Great Lakes. I fell in love with these mornings, finding it to be a grounding experience to begin the year.
However, I realized I hadn’t watched many sunrises from one year to the next. I began to think if I love this experience so much, why wasn’t I doing it more? In fact, I worked hard for a life of flexibility where I could seek this feeling each and every morning.
No earlier than December 30, and it may have even been on January 1 while driving to Whitefish Point, I decided, why not photograph every sunrise of 2019. Year of the Sunrise was born.
